How I Improved My English Listening Skills with YouTube (Free & Fun Tips)

How I Improved My English Listening Skills with YouTube

Free and fun methods I still use today

Listening is one of the hardest parts of learning English — especially when people speak fast or use slang. But I found a fun and free way to improve: YouTube!

Here’s what I do that really helped me:

1. I started with kids' content and subtitles

I wasn’t ashamed to start small. I watched simple cartoons, beginner English channels, and videos with clear subtitles. This helped me match the sound to the words.

2. I watched English vlogs with real conversations

I like to hear how people actually talk — not textbook English. So I followed daily vloggers, travel bloggers, and lifestyle YouTubers. I listened, paused, and repeated.

3. I used ‘slow playback’ on YouTube

If someone speaks fast, I just slow it down (click the gear icon > Playback speed > 0.75x). It helped me catch every word clearly.

4. I watched the same video 2–3 times

First, with subtitles. Then, without subtitles. And sometimes again, repeating the hard parts. Repetition helped me improve faster.

5. I wrote down useful words and phrases

When I hear a good sentence, I pause the video and write it in my notebook. Then I try to use it in my own speech later.

Some YouTube Channels I Recommend:

  • Speak English with Mr. Duncan
  • BBC Learning English
  • Speak English With Vanessa
  • Lingua Marina

YouTube helped me improve not just my listening, but also my confidence. If you’re also learning English, try watching what you enjoy.Even 10 minutes a day helps. Don’t worry about understanding everything. The more you listen, the better your brain gets at catching the sounds.
